Managing mycotoxins is getting more savvy as detection techniques become more sensitive and specific new tools enter the market to spot toxins at an early stage. At the same time, climate change and masked mycotoxins are some of the examples that make mycotoxin control more difficult and complex.
This webinar is aimed at nutritionists, feed industry representatives, universities and governments from around the world who all look for the latest views and study outcomes on how to best control mycotoxins and hence reduce the effects on animal health and performance. 3 great speakers will update you on their insights. Because it is a live and interactive webinar, questions can be asked during the webinar. The webinar will be hosted by Jake Davies, editor Poultry World at Proagrica.
Dr Johan de Meester, on behalf of Coceral, the European association representing the trade in cereals, rice, feedstuffs, oilseeds, olive oil, oils and fats, and agrosupply, will speak about mycotoxin management and raw materials – experiences in the European grain trading sector. He will explain the role of grain traders in the supply chain, the EU regularity framework and how traders deal with mycotoxin control (e.g. routine sampling and testing). Dr de Meester will also delve in to some of the outcomes of the biannual mycotoxin survey that COCERAL carries out.
Current poultry diets contain much higher levels of maize and by-products of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) than in the past. This makes it important to know the effect of feed containing medium to high concentration of Fusarium mycotoxins in poultry. Contamination of animal diets with deoxynivalenol can result in great economic losses for animal production. Radka Borutova, Business Development manager for mycotoxin management at Nutriad will give an overview of various impacts of mycotoxins on turkey health and performance. She will also share the information about the negative effect of deoxynivalenol on the performance of young turkey poults fed with 3 different mycotoxin deactivators.
Commercial mycotoxin management preparations are (partially) based on adsorbents. These adsorbents are able to bind, to a certain extent, specific mycotoxins in the gastro-intestinal tract. An in vitro model was set-up by the Department of Bio-Analysis of the Ugent (Belgium, MYTOX member) together with Orffa to test different single compounds and mixtures for their binding capacity (%) of mycotoxins. Binding of the mycotoxin by the adsorbent is tested at pH3 and subsequent raised to pH7 to simulate pH kinetics in the gastro-intestinal tract. The model was applied to analyse a large number of ingredients. These can be divided into inorganic adsorbents, yeast-based adsorbents and organic adsorbents (non-yeast). This screening resulted in the discovery of a best synergistic composition, consisting of five ingredients. This composition was benchmarked against 19 commercial, complexed mycotoxin management preparations sourced from global feed additives market in the same model.
