Controversy about Spray Dried Porcine Plasma (SDPP) has always existed. Now, the Chinese authorities have taken measures to ban the use of SDPP in pig feed in the wake of the African swine fever outbreaks. This has created an opening for proven alternative solutions.
In 2007, Porcine Circovirus was detected in SDPP by Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences in China. The outbreak of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) in North America in 2013 caused losses to the pig industry. PED then occurred in Taiwan and Canada in 2014. On February 18th in 2014, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced that Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea Virus (PEDV) was detected in SDPP. This previous history has resulted in SDPP being suspended in China in September 2018 because of the risk of African swine fever. SDPP has become a focus of suspicion but it has not been identified as a source at this time.
In order to prevent and control the situation of African Swine Fever (ASF), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China has strengthened supervision over pig feed. In September 13th, 2018, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced the requirement of feed producers to suspend production of pig feed with blood products from porcine blood.
The introduction of the latest policy means that the plasma, which have been controversial for many years in the industry, will be temporarily banned during the epidemic of ASF. It is also a question whether the use of plasma can be resumed in the future.
Angel Yeast predicted the risk of applying plasma products in pig feed more than 10 years ago, and began the research and development of alternative products. In 2005, Angel took the lead in using GroPro as protein material in animal breeding. After more than 10 years of continuous research and development, GroPro has been widely recognised by the industry.
In the future, Angel Yeast will continue to strengthen cooperation with scientific research institutes and large enterprises in research and development, in-depth research on immunity, palatability and other application functions, and iteratively develop more and better products and services.
With more than 10 years of research results on plasma replacement, Angel promoted the plasma replacement solution to the industry on the evening of the Announcement of the agriculture ministry. On the second day, the sales volume of GroPro rose to about 2,000 tons, and the required products were prepared and ready in a week.
The annual market of SDPP is about 50,000 tons in China. If we want to completely replace SDPP, the sufficient production capacity is needed. Angel has 10 yeast factories in the world, 15 highly modern yeast production lines, with more than 60,000 tons of GroPro capacity, that are enough to ensure market needs. As early as 2008, Angel has set up a perfect product coverage protection system. Each product in the production process has to undergo a number of stringent online indicators testing. Up to 280 production critical control points have helped to maintain the one-time qualification rate of finished products at over 99% for a long time. Unqualified products will not be manufactured, resolutely to ensure the stability and safety of products, thus ensuring the quality of feed products.
GroPro is rich in nucleotides, functional small peptides, amino acids, beta-glucan, mannan and other functional components. It can replace SDPP perfectly by 1 to 1. Angel Animal Nutrition Institute has carried out a large number of plasma replacement studies in the past 10 years, see Table 1 and Table 2. In addition, Angel was jointly developed with renowned academics and institutes such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Sichuan Agricultural University.
Through sensory evaluation, electronic tongue test, palatability test, production performance test and practical application of most leading enterprises in China, a large number of experimental data and application cases were obtained, which verified the actual effect of GroPro 1 to 1 perfect replacement of plasma, Figure 1.
