Austrian livestock farms ‘too small’

15-03-2007 | |

Despite years of structural change, Austrian livestock production remains very small-scale, putting the country at a disadvantage compared with its European neighbours.

The December 2006 livestock census by Statistik Austria shows that
farms have an average of 25 cattle, 70 pigs, 21 sheep and six goats. The average
for the old EU-15 countries is over 60 cattle and 180 pigs per farm.

The statistics office says there are 80,161 cattle farms in Austria with
around 2 million cattle. Some 3.14m pigs are kept on 45,036 farms, 312,400 sheep on
14,857 farms, and 53,100 goats on 9,149 farms.
